Vagabond Tales- And The Great Chicken Teriyaki Air Freshener Experiment

Thought I would give you an idea of Finn’s burr removal following our cave adventure. I tried to make it as gentle, as I could but he did have all three types of burrs scattered around…especially in his face and it took me a while with comb, brush, scissors! 🐾
We had never tried this! We have carried a crock pot full of cooked food for a social gathering or tail-gate in our car. But…we had never started a crock pot dinner in the back seat of our truck in the morning and driven all day with it slow cooking away! The aroma slowly crept up on us until no one had to ask what was for dinner. They knew at first whiff!

Two draw backs to cooking in the truck…1. Of course, the steady scent of roasting meat. 2. Every time the car is turned off..your dinner is turned off, too. The big win is…dinner was ready upon arrival .

Another warning… bok choy is hard to come by in Iowa!

Harry always keeps a good eye on our tires. Upon inspection this morning, he decided we needed to have one replaced. Once we were at Roger’s Repair, we found out all of the bearings needed tightening, as well. We were thankful to have found a great place with some good mechanics!

Don’t know how many of you know…years ago in 2015, I painted a life-sized buffalo for Milligan College’s 150th anniversary …a Buffalo Stampede -City-wide art project. It was challenging and lots of fun! So when Harry said he had found some grain silos in Fort Dodge, sporting murals towering 110-feet tall…I was excited!

Here I am for size comparison…
Australian artist, Guido van Helton painted over a three month period…October to December 2018. It contains 7 portraits of actual city residents all holding pieces of pottery. The clay found in Fort Dodge is known far and wide by potters.
Look closely and you will spy our camper! Maybe, five other campers here tonight. No Wi-Fi . We’ll double up again.
Bird’s- foot trefoils growing wild in the park. Finn always enjoys our hikes when we get to a campground.
We noticed the water table is down all over Iowa. Even their grass in the campground is crunchy!
We love trees and I couldn’t resist taking a picture of the guys in front of this big, old baby! We listen to books on these trips. Someone suggested “HARRY’s TREES” by Jon Cohen. We just finished it! We would probably give it a 4.3 or 4.5. It reads like a fairytale for grown-ups but reveals a deeply moving story about grief, hope, forgiveness and the healing power of human connection. We enjoyed it and of course, one reason is Harry’s name in the title and I have always loved fairytales! For transparency…this book does include some swear words, taking the Lord’s name in vain and a brief sexual scene. It seems difficult for authors to be published without having some of this included. More often than not, it is totally unneeded or wanted!
We are deciding on our next audio book, if you have something the three of us would enjoy, we take suggestions!

Vagabond Tales- Drive Through Rain

July 30, 2026. Big Sioux Recreation Area in South Dakota. Rainy but they need it!

No water at either of the campgrounds in Iowa. I imagine that is due to very cold weather in this state and freeze ups. We had to fill up before taking our campsite. Tomorrow is a long day of travel. Sleep well!

  1. I recommend for your book listening:Alexander Mccall Smith—The 44 Scotland st. series or the Corduroy Mansion series. I’ve read about 20 or so of his books. He also wrote the #1 Ladies Detective series which was on Masterpiece Theater.
