Couldn’t be in Lancaster without learning something about the Amish community. Harry booked a 2 hour tour for us. We learned a lot and still have many more questions. It has certainly given us some new food for thought and discussion!

Top two photos- The Amish carpenter with some of his work. Pictures in the center…Our farm house guide talking about men and their hats. A quilt shop full of Amish quilts to purchase. Another woodcarving. At the very bottom their Bible in Pennsylvania German…that is what they speak at home and at church. The children learn English at school. Bottom right is their Amish Newspaper…they get one every three weeks…it will have news from every family grouping throughout the country and it is printed in Ohio.
The top picture is for the Pollis! This is the Amish Wagon they move around all over their fields for their chickens! They told us the name of these cows but I missed it. I did find out their milk is richer and they use it for whipping cream and ice cream, though!
Amish buggies are gray and the Amish Mennonite are black. Picture at the bottom shows you how most of the roads are repaired…just the area the horse and buggies ride are the toughest on the pavement.
What we missed while on our tour! The amusement park beside our campground opened! It was packed!

Dinner at Belvedere Inn. Wow! I will have to lay low for days! Yummy for sure! Thank you so much for all of your celebratory greetings! 🩷

  1. Karen- I always enjoy traveling along with you and Harry. As always, you have a wonderful way of describing your travels. You might be interested to know that several groups of Mennonites have been building houses in Johnson county all summer for hurricane victims. They do incredible work. Safe travels home.

    1. Thank you so much, Amy! Certainly glad to have you come along! We learned the Mennonite community is not as strict as the Amish! Did you know Amish children do not go to school past 8th grade? They may do apprenticeships for a year or two after that but middle school is it. Good to hear from you, Amy! Would love to catch up sometime! ❤️K.

  2. Several years ago I went on a bus trip to Amish country. It was very interesting to see how they live. That’s when I got to go to the Sight and Sound Theater.

    So glad you all had a wonderful day to celebrate your anniversary!❤️
