Vagabond Tales-Better Than Yesterday

February 1, 2022

Why I didn’t take a picture of the van, beats me. We took a city tour of Pensacola, Florida today in a white van driven by Noah.
Most of the trip was narrated by the owner of the company by video on the tv but Noah broke in every now and then with ghost stories he had heard of concerning some of the places we saw along the way. No, we did not sign up for a ghost story trip…that was a bonus.
  • First Stop …Joe Patti’s Seafood
Harry chose Seafood Gumbo with rice while there. You try eating that in a newish van without spilling anything! Harry did a magnificent job! I went off the reservation and had an almond roll. Much easier to eat in a vehicle.
This ship belongs to Jeff Bezos. It is named the “Jacquelyn“ after his mother. This ship is going to play an important part in the space race he has entered among several billionaire entrepreneurs. His plan is to land the returning rocket boosters on the ship, rather than have them fall into the ocean.
  • Stop 2- Pensacola Museum of History
A much better picture of the pelican than the building,
which was pretty grand.
More history than one can recount!
  • Stop 3- Pensacola Museum of Art
We found it very interesting to know that the Pensacola Museum of Art is being housed in an old jail.
The Art piece on the left is by, Jean-Marcel St. Jacques. He tells that he makes wooden quilts that remind him of his great grandmother’s hand stitched quilts. He collected these scraps from his house that was damaged from Katrina. The picture on the right is someones art studio. I can hear them say, “ You are locked in this cell and you can’t come out until you’ve done a masterpiece…”
  • Stop 4- Museum of Commerce
Quite a cute party venue! Wouldn’t this be fun for a Birthday celebration?
  • Stop 5- Old Christ Church
Beautiful windows. Three of the pastors are buried under the pulpit area. Said to be very shallow graves and Noah, our bus driver told a story about the three of them showing up places in town with bare feet. Back in the day it was irreverent to be buried with your shoes on.
  • Stop 6- Dorr House
The Clara Barkley Dorr House. Lumber was their livelihood.
Pictures from the village tour! The Camilla are in bloom.
Several blossoms escaped frost bite.
The last stop on the van tour was Graffiti Bridge! We saw about 8 different color renditions of the bridge. As we understand it…about ever 4 months the bridge changes color and new graffiti begins afresh!
This restaurant, McGuire’s Irish Pub, came highly recommended by Noah! It didn’t disappoint. For an appetizer, we had Ruben egg rolls for the first time! I will try them at home! They were so good! Patrons sign their name to a dollar and the establishment staple guns them on the ceiling. Last estimate…they had over two million dollars hanging from the rafters. The IRS makes them pay tax on it, if you can believe it!

  1. Are the Dorrs from the Dorr related to Harry’s family?

I love the wooden quilt! It is so unusual and beautiful!

    1. I loved it, too! So pretty…he did have five weapons he had fashioned hanging on it so…not so sure about that. We are going to check on the Doors from Pensacola…we just don’t know.

  2. Karen, Loved reading about your tour of Pensacola. There’s one more famous thing about Pensacola: I was born there in 1949! The family story was that my dad was stationed at Elgin Air Force Base and my mom refused to let a military doctor deliver her first born. So, when I came a month early, my dad told the story of a harrowing trip to Pensacola. They encountered a wreck which blocked the road, but were saved from my dad doing my delivery when a local sheriff offered them a police escort around the wreck and to the hospital! I was born a few minutes later—4 lbs. and a few ounces. Enjoy your trip!

    1. Amy!!! That is such a cute story…and so dramatic! I will have to call attention to this story on the blog! I love it! So glad you had a police escort into this world! Sure is a better place because of you!❤️
