Vagabond Tales- In the Middle of a Cow Pasture at a Maple Farm=No Phone or WiFi

September 25-26, 2021 Robb Farm- Harvest Host

Yesterday the rain and wind were so persistent and strong, the tram at Cannon Mountain and the white mountain cog railway were closed. But this morning was another story, we were blessed with an absolutely gorgeous autumn day! We headed for Canon Mountain and took the tram to the top for a little hike to the lookout tower and some wonderful views!

Not many companions on this trip up
but the line for the next trip was out the door.
As you can see the colors were not far along.
Always a few pockets of color every now and then but we are just a tad early!

Franconia Notch State Park has been known as the home of the Old Man of the Mountain. He was a recognizable rock formation that made its way onto stamps and even the New Hampshire State Quarter. Our friend, Dan Johnson, even remembers snapping his portrait with his Brownie camera. Unfortunately, the Old man collapsed in 2003 due to weathering and the extreme winter elements in this region.

The Balsam Pine on this trail was so fragrant!
Below you will see…today there was an old man and woman sighting on the mountain.

It’s Maple Syrup Time-

This is the Harvest Host home we stayed at tonight.
No…this is their home. We stayed in their cow pasture in our camper.

Brattleboro, Vermont. My mother’s parents were brought up here and our hosts knew some Squires…we both think they were related to George and Clara Squires….my grandparents.

This is the cow pasture! I could hear them bellowing throughout the night! Soft ground and difficult to maneuver the camper here but he did it! Harry is getting ready to grill some pork chops
from Troyer’s, just outside of Jonesborough! They are yummy!
The Robbs have a large syrup making business. They tap over 6,500 trees each winter and they are not using buckets like Harry and I and perhaps, you, were familiar with. They use a web of blue tubing about as thin as my pinkie. During the season moose and squirrels create havoc with their lines ensuring one of the Todd’s must go into the woods to search for the break in the lines and repair it. Each line of tubing snakes through the woods and ends up in a holding tank that is then pumped into the main chamber to be heated. They still use a wood fire for the process!
The white box you see is the holding tank.
The Vermont State Sticker is placed!

September 26 found us watching our home church on line and driving toward home. We are staying at the Mahlon Dickerson Reservation in New Jersey.
