Vagabond Tales- Lunch with a View

Given our experience with how long it takes to get places out here on the dirt roads…We left early this morning. Destination- Ward Charcoal Ovens…a Nevada State Historic Park. It took us a little more than an hour from where we are staying in the metropolis of Baker, Nevada- Population 58 as per the 2018 census.

Ward Charcoal Ovens- These ovens were constructed during the mid 1870’s and are larger than any other ovens of this kind in Nevada. 27 feet in diameter and 30 feet high. Each had the capacity of 35 cords of wood which was burned for a period of 12 days to produce about 50 bushels of good solid charcoal per cord. This stripped the area of all timber for a radius of 35 miles.

The charcoal was used in the smelters nearby which were processing silver, gold and lead ore.

Temps in the mid to low 60’s, bright blue sky with a brilliant sun.
We were the only ones visiting this historic site.
After only 3 years of operation, the silver boom waned, the trees for miles were gone and the need for charcoal ended. For the stockman and prospectors the ovens served as shelter in the harsh winters…it is also said. one or two stagecoach bandits hid from the law in the ovens.
I liked this diagram! Pretty detailed!
Of course, Harry wanted to walk up to the overlook. This is as far as I went!
Our lunch bench and our view! Just us and the scenery!
There were 2 lime kilns remains on the side of the mountain.
I won’t make any comments on this but I will say…
This was taken within minutes of each other!
One of us had the preferred view, in our opinion.

    1. Really, if you remember the sun in the west…mid sixties is perfect hiking weather. None of us, including Onyx get over heated! She has needed water more often during our walks this trip. None of us are getting any younger! Love you!❤️. How did Kaitlyn fare on her speech grade-wise? Loved the t-shirt!
