Given our experience with how long it takes to get places out here on the dirt roads…We left early this morning. Destination- Ward Charcoal Ovens…a Nevada State Historic Park. It took us a little more than an hour from where we are staying in the metropolis of Baker, Nevada- Population 58 as per the 2018 census.
Ward Charcoal Ovens- These ovens were constructed during the mid 1870’s and are larger than any other ovens of this kind in Nevada. 27 feet in diameter and 30 feet high. Each had the capacity of 35 cords of wood which was burned for a period of 12 days to produce about 50 bushels of good solid charcoal per cord. This stripped the area of all timber for a radius of 35 miles.
The charcoal was used in the smelters nearby which were processing silver, gold and lead ore.

We were the only ones visiting this historic site.

This was taken within minutes of each other!
One of us had the preferred view, in our opinion.
I like “your side” view the best! Glad weather was sunny and a tad warmer for you guys. Loving our 80s here in TN. 🙂 love you guys.
Really, if you remember the sun in the west…mid sixties is perfect hiking weather. None of us, including Onyx get over heated! She has needed water more often during our walks this trip. None of us are getting any younger! Love you!❤️. How did Kaitlyn fare on her speech grade-wise? Loved the t-shirt!
So interesting! Have never heard of this! Joan

The ovens were really beautiful! Shaped like beehives standing amid the mountains and against the blue sky. Wow! Such a nice day! Thanks for following!
Pretty cool ovens – now you see how the area became “tree-less”!
Pretty blue skies for you. Nice!
It was a gorgeous day, Chris! So fun!💗
