Vagabond Tales-This Day Warrants Several Titles*What a Difference Two Hours Make…or *Boy, Did the Wind Ever Catch Up With Us…or *Welcome to the Dust Bowl

March 14, 2024. The End of the Line RV Park Site 24

Last night’s blood moon from our phone camera and one from a live feed, on line.

Beautiful sight!

As in most fairy tales, today, every thing was great…until it wasn’t. We knew there were wind advisories out for this region. This morning it was very calm, and a pretty day, so we decided to go to our newest national park, which was only a short distance away. How did we even hear about this new park you might ask?

This is the press release Harry saw in his news feed put out by President Biden and the park service. This simple press release put Grenada, Colorado on Harry’s radar. As he worked out our itinerary, he knew we needed to see this.

^ The bottom photo in the picture above is of the water reservoir for 7,194 people of Japanese descent held in the containment camp, Amachi in Grenada, Colorado during WW II . There were 9 of these containment camps throughout the US. The tower is one of 7, eight sided guard towers they had around the perimeter. This one has been reconstructed.

This is what it looks like now…prairie.
This was one of the buildings used as an elementary school house. Actually there are quite a few foundations left, tucked under the grasses.
I do not think that small building was the police station but…perhaps. They did say they didn’t need a large space, since they had a peaceful community.

There was a very nice audio program we downloaded and listened to as we drove, so we learned many interesting Amache facts from actual people who shared about their time of containment. We spent about 90 minutes exploring and headed downtown to visit the museum. It was located in an old bank building and filled with Japanese arts and crafts and a few war memorabilia . We didn’t spend too much time there. However, before we left, we did find out, there had been a lot of confusion about the National Park Status from many people coming through since January. I guess, we weren’t the only ones.

Stepping out of the museum we realized the atmosphere had change. This was not the happy fairy tale anymore…but the wicked wind, who swirled around us, pushed us into the truck, followed us into the campground and shoved us with fierce force into the the camper to find Finn curled up into an exceptionally small ball and the camper rocking and rolling!

Here is a picture from the campground, showing how much dirt was being sucked up by the wind. There may have been 35 minutes between blue skies when we went in and yellow skies when we left the museum.
Eight seconds from inside the camper. Turn the sound up for full effect. You may not get to play this, if you are not on the actual blog site. http://www.vagabondtales.blog

We arrived back from our excursion at 1:00 and we did not open the door again until 8 o’clock, when poor Finn had to relieve himself. But this is what the door looked like before they went through it. The wind didn’t really die down until 11:00 pm. We were so thankful for His watch-care!

The dirt and dust made its way through the locked door and screen. The dust particles were in the air, which made it difficult to breathe.

We made the decision to leave, as soon as we could in the morning. The dust bowl had run us out of Dodge…Or rather, Grenada.

I’m writing now from Boiling Spring State Park in Oklahoma. It was a planned stop and we simply arrived early! Luckily there was still a site for us with full hook-ups. Phone service is sketchy and we are sitting right in front of the visitor center to hop on their Wi-Fi. To send this out.

Tomorrow, we have cleaning and rest on our list! ❤️

  1. How scary to have those high winds! And to be in a camper! Poor Finn. Wishing you better days ahead. DM

  2. What an interesting era in the history of our country. We don’t seem to learn from it. Glad it is a national park now.

Have you had issues with the park budget cuts yet? Hopefully things will be resolved before summer hits….

You also experienced a tiny taste of the dust bowl. Can you imagine living like that for years?!?

Hopefully you will have blue skies and calm breezes ahead…..

  3. Thanking God for His watch over you all! We are having winds, but not like that!! Glad you relocated. Maybe it will be better weather!

  4. I’m glad you got to explore the town a little before the wind came. That would’ve been very scary to be in a camper with such high winds, glad you could make it to another campsite away from that weather. ❤️
