Vagabond Tales- Mistaken Identity

February 13, 2025

Before leaving on this trip, we had joined a Bible Study at church called Route 66. In person, it meets on Wednesday each week but this week we watched the recording this morning. It is awesome these are recorded so we won’t miss a thing as we travel!

It takes quite a few wires and his computer to get this to happen. That little number right off of Harry’s is our Vornado…we think it’s the best space heater going for campers and we definitely needed it this morning. Temperature was 46 degrees this am.

We rested a bit after that, puttered around the camper and then decided we wanted to take Finn for a walk. Harry called a Texas Plantation near- by, The Varner-Hogg Plantation. He spoke to the docent at length, we hopped in the car mid afternoon and arrived an hour before closing. Perfect timing for a dog walk.

This is where we ended up.He had put a different historic home in the GPS. It never occurred to him to check the names. It became increasingly bewildering, none of the things he discussed with the docent were like described. It was a plantation, it had a huge lawn Finn could run in and we had never been there before.
No dogs allowed in the building!😕
A few archeological digs were taking place on the Levi Jordan property.
Bricks were made back in the 1800’s so they have made a small wood fired oven and children and adults, alike can come out and make their own brick! Armadillo’s have left their mark in the garden area noted by the bottom right picture. Glad they haven’t made it up to East Tennessee yet!
Driving back to the camper, we spotted the plantation Harry had called about. How we drove past, I don’t know! Sadly, it was closed when we arrived. Rice University archeological students and their professor will be at The Varner-Hogg this Saturday, if you want to join their dig! Unfortunately, we will miss it! We are off to San Antonio in the morning!
Goodbye to site 224 !
