Vagabond Tales-Vicksburg National Military Park and Roadside Oddities

** Contest Edition February 8, 2025

We had an absolutely beautiful day. Maybe a bit windy, but warm and sunny! We headed to Vicksburg, Mississippi.

The movement on the Mississippi River was controlled by the Confederates at Vicksburg, and Abraham Lincoln sent General Grant to conquer Vicksburg. 806 Union soldiers died and 805 Confederates died during the siege with 37,000 injured and the Union was ultimately victorious.

These two romped all over the battlements!

Oddities…

Highway 65-Newellton, Louisiana Mailbox. Driving by, we just had to stop! 14 feet tall, 8 feet deep, 4 feet wide, we found out it has been around since 1956. Nothing but farmland all around so it really stands out from a distance.

On the same highway off of a bridge, Harry spied this giant snapping turtle building. We did not go down as we were afraid someone might be living in it. We did find it online and you can watch a man and his son go into it. It is an indoor fishing hut. It might even be stream worthy. But it looks pretty permanently parked right now.

And now for a late lunch…Once again we used Trip Advisor and chose to eat at the #1 Lunch restaurant in Vicksburg and they came up with…TaDa…..The Tomato Place with specialty tomato sandwiches. When we drove up, we were floored!

I watched that umbrella overturn. 😳Chicken-liver me, I chose to stay in the car with Finn while Harry ordered.
We didn’t see their state food license but the food was delicious! I had a Fried Green Tomato,BLT and Harry had a Po Boy Catfish sandwich.

** Contest… while at The Camp yesterday, we came across a delicious condiment they make themselves. We bought a pint for ourselves and a pint for a lucky winner. Here’s how you enter. Text one of us, email us, or write a note on the comment section…( the only issue with the comments is we are getting most in as anonymous. So you will have to sign your message. You have 1 day to get your entry in. We will spin the wheel at 9:00pm eastern standard time. We realize this is early on our trip and may not have many takers or followers so it may be an easy win for someone.

  1. The sandwiches look yummy! I love the giant turtle building. I don’t think I would have gone in it either.

    condiment: smoky jalapeno ketchup?
