Vagabond Tales- Is it Dead? Should I Give Up?

February 16, 2024 Topsail Hill Preserve State Park, Santa Rosa, Florida

This is..My sour dough starter…it’s been fed and has been resting for over 3 days out on the camper kitchen counter. Normally, it takes 24 hours for it to bubble and ask me to make it up into bread… but I’m afraid the cold, damp and inconsistent environment of the camper has been its demise. We did get one batch out of it on this trip, as you remember but sadly, it does not appear to have made it! Strike up “The Ode to the Sour Dough Starter”. 🥲

Perhaps you can tell, today was a bit of a slow, soggy day. A great day for relaxing, reading, game playing and working on projects. ( Harry worked on fixing the water filter today that had given him so much grief earlier in the trip. We had a new one shipped to the campsite and we picked it up today!)

Picture number 1…Harry doing his plank. Picture 2..After Harry completes it and drops down on the floor in exhaustion…Finn commiserates with him!
We had a bit of a hike but we didn’t want to go too far afield since the weatherman had given us 70% odds it would rain today. The berried tree is a mystery to me. I’m thinking holly family but you can see that the leaves don’t really scream that. Bottom picture shows that the pollen is floating atop the lakes, now.
Finn and I thought we would watch for squirrels and ducks. We had no sooner gotten situated but the rain started. The long picture of the lake, if you look close enough you’ll see rain drops.

So do I throw the sourdough out or give it a few more days?

  1. Karen.  I used to keep my starter in the fridge until I wanted to use it and then let it warm a bit. I think I’d wait a day or two.!  Bad luck with the weather but at least it’s not ice!
