Vagabond Tales— 400 Live Oaks

February 5, 2024 Skidaway State Park, Savannah, GA

Apologies…We had very heavy rains last night and our weak Wi-Fi didn’t allow us to post in the evening. So, I posted this morning. Tonight they are calling for more rain and so I am anticipating the same.

Noble Jones came over in the mid seventeen hundreds with the English to colonize Georgia. Naming his plantation after his home in England he crowned it…wait for it…Wormsloe. Maybe with a new start, a new name could have been in order. Although I am not a fan of the wormy name, I really enjoyed this park! It boasts a brand new visitor center with plenty of parking. They were practicing driving a brand new tram around, so we think they may have plans to stop public vehicle traffic on the road from which I videoed.
These are some of the 400 Live Oaks Noble planted in 1752 on either side of the entrance to his farm. Notice all of the vegetation on the branches of the trees. Most are Reserection Ferns resplendently green and full, thanks to the rain last night! We were excited to see they are looking ahead and planting more live oaks for the next 100 or so years.
At the superintendent’s cottage, as we signed in…I spotted this beautiful Comilla bush! The first I’ve seen this trip.
The top three pictures display the Tabby method of building Wormsloe. Nobel had 8 foot walls around the home. Actually the walls have faired better than the house itself. The Tabby building material is made up of oyster shell, lime, sand and water. The bottom pictures shows how the workers, indentured servants, or slaves lived. The type of construction …wattle and daub. Woven wood and covered with a cement plaster….picture far right bottom. The fence seems to be the stems of the Palmetto Plant.
Slave’s quarters. Wattle and Daub construction.
I love these marshes! I’d probably get lost but it would be fun kayaking through the water trails! Harry would keep us on course!
Such a beautiful hike…and nary a fellow hiker
except that which Finn spied out.
Two of these armadillos crossed our path but when they saw Finn…they kicked it into high gear!
A special cannoli for a good boy!

      1. The pics of the hanging moss and marshes are so much like ours was in SC. It is beautiful to see. And altho we had a boat, we did see also many people in kayaks. You should try it! M.E.

      2. Thank you for the encouragement. We will see. The wind has been mighty these last few days and chillier than I would like if I was out on the water. We are here a couple more days…we will see!🩷

      3. You just have to be mindful of the tides or you’ll get stuck. Been on that particular journey..

  1. What a beautiful park! Love the huge oaks! I know Finn enjoyed his treat. It looks good enough for human consumption!

    1. Woof & Gang specializes in human food grade treats! I should have taken pictures of their Birthday Table! Megan would have loved seeing the bakery even though it is for Doggies!🙂
