Vagabond Tales-Trails and Tales

February 3, 2024 Skidaway Island, State Park, Savannah, Georgia

In November of last year, Harry and I started a new schedule of exercising each morning. Now, we don’t get every day in, but we are averaging about four days a week. With this camping trip, we decided we would try to keep it up, in addition to, hiking as much as we can in the parks. Today between our work out in the camper and our Big Ferry Hike I reached 11,465 steps. That’s nothing compared to the days, Harry exercises/ walks with Finn and I and then goes golfing sometimes reaching 18,000 steps but this is a good number for me! So yes, I am bragging.

I borrowed Harry’s black cap for the hike.
A hat is something I did not pack so it is on my souvenir wish list. Our son Ryan, thinks these sunglasses 🕶️ make me look like President Biden.
What do you think?
This trek was packed with other hikers and many of them were four legged.much to Finn’s delight. The trail itself borders the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway affording views like this,
We climbed all over Confederate earthworks and the mortar battery.
Top left…a tower looking out over the Intracoastal. Bottom left… an old liquor still…they say they found many of these over the island. Top right…Palm fronds in the sun. Bottom right…a live oak for which, the Savannah area is noted
I’m loving the graceful lines of this tree!
Trees are so cool!😎

I had the opportunity to attend a talk by children’s author Phyllis L. Tildes. It was packed with children coloring pages she had provided from some of her books and their parents. She originally lived and worked as a graphic designer in Connecticut. At age 50, she published her first book. Most of her books were small, hard board early books for children. They all are about nature. My favorite book she talked about and actually read parts of was “Bunny’s Big Surprise” . She didn’t have any of these books available to purchase or I would have gotten one of them. The story revolves around a bunny, who finds an egg and tries to find its owner. She actually lives in Skidaway right now and this book includes local animals that one would find here. It would make a cute book to read in the spring.

Phyllis L Tildes
She is both the artist and author. Most of her works are done in a watercolor medium called gouache..
This blew my mind…She is holding a first run of this book. all pages front and back printed on this one piece of paper. Then it is cut and bound with a cover.
