Vagabond Tales- Last Day in Fresno

August 25, 2023. Fresno California.

( A Happy 50th Anniversary to my brother, Rick and our dear sister-in-law, Kathy!🎊. They got married 50 years ago today in a heat wave in Kansas, just like the one we are experiencing right here in California!)

Lots of murals in this city! I’m thinking Johnson City, TN has some nicer ones! These are just a representative number. There were scads more but you don’t have to have mural overload like we had today!

Many towns are going this route and adding art to their buildings. Two questions I hope every city considered before they began…What is the process for keeping the murals in good shape? Some of these were past their prime…Will you touch them up and put a new sealer on them or paint over it with a new creation? The second thing…will you post addresses and possibly a map of them so visitors, and residents can actually find them? Fresno had such a thing and it was very helpful!

Kearney Mansion

The Kearney Mansion was on our agenda for this afternoon. We had a private tour from a young man named Joshua. He introduced us to the Raisin King, M. Theo Kearney. He was a pioneer in agriculture of many fruits, vegetables, and trees but he became most well known for his grape drying techniques. Below is a picture of how grapes used to be grown and harvested before they trained them on the trellises of today.

This would be absolutely back breaking work!
We had made reservations but everything was locked
up tighter than a drum when we got there. We snooped around until we were found out!
Top picture is Theo Kearney and the one below, complete with a sherif badge, large belt buckle, boots and a hat is our trusty guide, Joshua. The middle bottom picture is where all of the agricultural records were kept and passed down. To the left of that is his safe. Everything else is a sampling of the rooms.

Do yourself a favor, if you are ever in Fresno…treat yourselves to a meal at Heirloom! We ate there both nights! If there was one by us…I might quit cooking and have them serve us every night.

We are off early tomorrow for Yosemite! We are anxious to get there!
