Forestiere Underground Gardens …#1

Our first look at the gardens was a bit sketchy
but it was the number 1 thing to see in the area.
Entering the underground gardens we learn about its creator, Baldassare Forestiere. A Sicilian immigrant and citrus farmer who spent 40 years excavating rooms, building beautiful courtyards, experimenting with citrus plants and using only farm tools and his imagination.
Rhonda our super guide took us through this unique garden.
He built the well shaped vents to let in the air and sunlight. Under most of them he built a planter. The trees would be trained to grow up through them. Many of these trees are over 100 years old and are still producing fruit.
He was ingenious, just like many men of his era!
A large citrus,- pomelo and a date palm tree full of dates…note the clusters in the tree at the bottom right.

Shinzen Japanese Friendship Garden…#2

The underground garden was remarkably cool but the Japanese gardens were another story. Our car was registering the outside temperature as 102°.

Although there was a lot of shade it was extremely hot.
I took this picture of someone taking pictures …
just so you can be as impressed as we were by this young
lady’s fortitude with the heat!
Dinner at Heirloom! We will be coming back tomorrow…
farm to table deliciousness!
