Vagabond Tales- Harry’s Ship Came In

February 23, 2023 Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, Topsail Hill Preserve State Park Site 74

We spent three hours on the beach. While I walked the beach and sat in the peanut gallery…Harry used his hidden shipbuilding talents to produce his first ever ship sand structure.
We both think this is the whitest, finest, cleanest sand we have ever seen on a beach. It is unbelievable how clean it is…no debris. For all of you shell hunters, it also means very few shells at all on the beach. It is a disappointment for shell seekers but this is the first time I have felt like it was safe to walk and not step on anything dangerous. The Ranger explained there is a sandbar that runs along in front of this beach and it collects all of the shells and all of the flotsam.
This was such an unusual atmospheric day…Ocean spray/ fog that the sun tried and tried to burn off but never quite got it accomplished. Someone on the beach explained to the Ranger he felt with the colors it could have been snow he was looking at…minus the temperatures. It really felt mysterious!

  1. I have been wanting to go to that area of Florida. Is the water rather clear? I looks so gorgeous!! Joan

    1. The water is very clear and the shades of turquoise are pretty remarkable! Even on a day like today that seemed to glow white, the blue green of the water along with the white foam of the was just awesome. Chris and Michelle were in Naples, Florida for work…just a couple hours from here and they loved it! Another place to look!

  2. A sandcastle SHIP – very cool. Never saw a sand ship.
Colton Dixon – Christian song “Build a Boat” is what that reminded me of. His song about the Mercy Ships – doctor’s helping people in 3rd world countries with surgeries they could not afford.
His lyrics, “I will build a boat in the sand, where they say it never rains, I will stand up in faith, I’ll do anything it takes, with your wind in my sails, your love never fails or fades….I’ll build a boat so let it rain.”
