Vagabond Tales-Hike Into the Floridian Prairie Wilderness

February 3, Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park, Okeechobee, FL

Driving up to the gate, Finn is excited!
We were told to watch for wildlife as we drove in…Finn was on it!
We couldn’t have come down the road very far, when we spied this tremendous hawk. They have red shouldered hawks here, so if this is one…I will guess it is a female. No noticeable red shoulders. I will ask a Ranger tomorrow.

We set out on our long walk this morning. The Preserve boasts 54,000 acres and we are close to being in the middle of it. It is certainly understandable that we are over an hour from the closest grocery store. We approached one trail and the signs said no pets. Then we saw the sign below and I really didn’t want Finn to walk to close to the edge of the road or trail!

We are planning to take some lawn chairs out to this place that we checked out this morning. They have an astronomy campground. There was only 1 camper out there taking advantage of the camping experience that is free from campfires and bright lights. Even the restrooms sport red lights in the evenings here. This campground has a Dark Sky Designation.

This soil had been worked up by some machine that made walking a bit laborious…like walking in deep fluffy sand. I love this picture of my boys!❤️
These guys in a big tall swamp Jeep passed us. They give tours in it here but they have canceled the next two weekends of their prairie tours due to lack of personnel. Today we got to witness them training some young guys!

We had a relaxing lunch and then the wind blew in some rain, so the three of us holed up in the camper…Harry worked on trip stuff. I finished a button Bracelet for The River’s craft sales.. can you believe they have made over $25,000 on the sales of these bracelets over the last 4 or 5 years? And Finn worked on his snoring and chewing skills while we waited for the rain to abate! No rain in the forecast for tomorrow!
