Vagabond Tales-Get Their Daily Fill of Sulfur

August 25, 2022. Mineral, California Volcano Country Camping and RV Site-19

Contest Found in the Blog

Entries are due by text, email, or a message on the blog by Saturday, August 27 at 6pm Pacific Time. We’ll draw or spin for a name and announce a winner Saturday night. Good Luck!

A day at Lassen National Park.

I shared a picture a couple days ago of a badly burned forest. Well, Lassen National Park was caught in the same Dixie Fire of 2021 that had caused the other. Lassen lost 60% of their forests. Work crews are all around the area as lumber companies take advantage of the loss. We found that the lumber is still viable after a forest fire if it is still standing but the clock starts ticking …they must be harvested within two years of the fire. You could tell, there was an urgency with the lumberjacks! Time is running out for them!

They peel the bark right in the staging area so none of the charred bark goes to the mill.. the charred bark is ground and sprayed into the forests.
Emerald Lake
The trail we hiked today was named…Bumpass Hell.
It is the largest of the eight hydrothermal areas of the park. Kendall Bumpass discovered this area and declared he was going to make his fortune through tourism. Unfortunately, he fell through the thin crust into a 322 degree acidic fissure with one leg and he says, that began his very own private hell. That great smell of rotten eggs (sulfur)permeated the air throughout our hike.
This is a fumarole ( an opening in the earth that emits steam and volcanic gasses) and it is one of the hottest in the world.
Don’t you love the color?
I was up here trying to get a picture of Lake Helen.
The colors were amazing today…including that sky!
Lake Helen
The boardwalks were riddled throughout so one could walk safely.
We walked on a boardwalk over this mineral stream!
Lassen Peak seen between the trunks of some burned pine.

We found out why Finn had been complaining about our campsite. He kept saying he wished we were at #9. Today he showed us he had been hoping for a sighting.

Finn doesn’t know it but he is in for a bath tomorrow! Our dusty campsite has added to his dust mop look.

If you are following this blog, then you are aware of our goal. The goal- to camp in each of the 48 contiguous United States. The Contest question…What States are left for us to camp in? Remember, your answers must all be in by 6pm pacific time on August 27.

  1. You are up late! The blues are amazing! Too beautiful to be true. They look photoshopped. I guess it is good that all that wood is not wasted….. Montana, Washington, Oregon (So why are you in CA?)

    1. Only 10:04 pm here right now! Pacific Time…We are also trying to visit all of the National parks. There are several in Northern California we have not been . When we complete this trip…the onlyNP’s in these 48 states we won’t have visited are a few in middle California. We will fly out next year to see them.

  2. I hope Finn gets his wish. I’ve been a Sasquatch believer without a sighting since 1969/70 when we lived in Vancouver BC.

  3. BEAUTIFUL pictures! The colors are so vibrant! Thanks for taking me along on your trips!
Will miss you at lunch today! Love you!

You still need Oregon, Washington, and Montana, I believe.
