Vagabond Tales- “Brake Down” at the Breaks

Dave and Ruth Ann couldn’t get their church on their devices so…they came over to our camper and watched their Simple Rhythms of Abingdon church on my iPad.

If you remember, I shared Dave drone their Motorhome into the park on a wing and a prayer. His brakes went out on the curvy, twisty road. He started contacting his insurance guy and mechanics around here locally, hoping he could encourage someone to to come check his brakes out before heading home.

Sunday afternoon he received a call from a mechanic in Haysi, who would be willing to come out and check it out today. He and his buddy showed up and after doing a bit of tinkering and a whole lot of talking, their recommendation would be to get it towed into town so it could be put up on a lift.

With the remaining part of our afternoon, did a brief walk and looked around the park. Ruth Ann decided not to take out a book from the little lending library, as it was filled with nothing but Harlequin romances.

Today we drove over to Southern Gap…they have three or four stations set up for viewing Elk. Middle of the day was not the perfect viewing time but it was a glorious day and a great exploring trip.
One of the viewing stations. Inside are a couple rows of bleachers.

The only evidence we saw of elk was a taxidermist’s sample and elk skat.
This was one of the coolest things we saw today…Buchanan County has a Honey Bee project. The electric fence around the enclosure and heavy steel fence is designed to keep the elk and bear out…and the chain link fence inside around the bee boxes also is electrified. It was particularly interesting since Dave is a beekeeper.
The spring tick season at the Breaks is in full swing. We have all found them crawling on us but since Dave has been out in the tall grasses looking for the shed antlers of the elk…he has taken the prize. This get-up with masking tape and high water socks is his full line of defense. Ha!
