Vagabond Tales- Tour Some Summer Cottages in NewPort, Rhode Island

September 22, 2021.

**Reminder…to qualify for the contest drawing tomorrow, your correct answer must be sent in by 11 pm eastern standard time tonight!**

Today we joined a Newport, Rhode Island white trolly tour. It included the grand mansions along Belleview Ave. which the owners called their summer cottages. None of them lived there year round. Our driver was a scream… regaling us with funny stories of the rich and famous along with very interesting historic information. We got to drive-by Jay Leno’s 13.5 million dollar home and took a walking tour of Cornelius Vanderbilt the second’s summer cottage, The Breakers! Despite a bit of rain it was a delightful day!

The yellow house was the home of President Dwight D. Eisenhower when he vacationed as a President. All of the neighbors would get a note delivered to their home when he was visiting, asking for no one to hang out clothes to dry while he was in residence. He didn’t want to see their laundry. Of course, there were no clothes dryers back then. The other were just some cottages I snapped from the trolly.
The Breakers…named because of the massive rocks below that break the waves when coming in to shore.
Some rooms in the Breakers.
Ceilings in the Vanderbilt summer cottage.
Their veranda with the ocean in the distance.
The side /back view of the home.

They had beautiful landscaping but nothing like the Biltmore House in Asheville, NC. Below you will see some of their last flowers of the season.

A view of the Ocean breakers from the end of their significant yard.
Their front lawn.
Beautiful wrought iron work!
So we will leave you tonight with our RI sticker placement. And a first for us…we had an ice cream truck come through the campground tonight!

***Remember to get your answers in for the contest drawing. It closes at 11:00 pm EST.

  1. On your way to Franconia I hope you can take the Kangamagus Highway (Lincoln to Conway or visa versa). It was our favorite fall color trip. Like the Blue Ridge Parkway through really nice country. Dan & Karol Lynn
