Vagabond Tales- Visit the Shetucket and Mystic Rivers

Shetucket River

Today started out with a long walk along the Shetucket River that runs beside our campground. It was easy to figure out why all of the mosquitoes are around our campground! The fall colors have been very few and far between on this trip. We are a bit early in the season, I guess but we did find a bit of fall on this hike.

Under the railroad trestle we found our trail head.

Here are some plants that were sporting some fall color on the trail. One of them is the Autumn Olive tree/shrub that we also saw earlier on this trip in Virginia. I made cookies from them. Can you tell us which one of these plant pictures is an Autumn Olive? We will accept answers via cell text messages, FB messages or directly on this Blog. All correct answers will be eligible for the drawing. This one has a short fuse. It will be over 11PM eastern standard time on Wednesday September 22, 2021. The drawing will take place on September 23rd.
This was a muddy hike and if you look closely the picture on the right shows the grass was all matted down going in one direction. I think it was very likely the River had escaped its banks and was rushing over the trail not long ago.

Mystic River

Mystic River

Onyx was ready for a rest after our Shetucket walk, so Harry and I headed for the not so sleepy town of Mystic. Home of the Mystic River Drawbridge and a myriad of cute shops and restaurants.

A loud alarm sounds that can be heard all over the town. It opened twice while we were there but we only watched one raising. It opened for this beautiful ship.
If you ever get to Mystic…you Must stop at SIFT…Crazy delicious!
Harry had fun playing with his Birthday gift from Chris and Michelle tonight. Battlechip…I am afraid I had trouble seeing the ball and actually hitting it so he will have to find some other competitors. But Ken…look out…his chipping game may be quite improved. Look at this giant field! It’s not too far away from our campsite. The perfect pitching spot.
