Vagabond Tales-Parksapalooza-Virginia

September 16, 2021

Most of you know, Harry is a board and card game maker. One of his most recent is Parksapalooza-Virginia. It features all of the VA state parks. Last week we visited one and yesterday and today we have visited two more. As we have test played his game we have talked about the parks and their amenities. Below you will see a snapshot of his game and the last two Virginia parks we have visited.

Parkapalooza

Bear Lake State Park

Seems if you are interested in fishing, this might be the park for you. They have built the Channel Cat Trail around the lake…adding benches and resting places for your tackle-box and poles. Instead of woodland identification signs, they have placed fishing guides and advice for catching each type of fish found in this lake. The CCC built this park back in the 1940’s from worn out farm land. They reforested it and now it is a woodland wonderland. They also built the picnic pavilion and the amphitheater.

Our drive today took us across two unique bridges…or to be more precise tunnels.

The Hampton Tunnel

The Chesapeake Bay Bridge/Tunnel

The x on the picture shows where the bridge turns into a tunnel under the bay.
Can’t imagine how they built this! It is a 17.6 mile bridge-tunnel that runs over and under water, as deep as 95 feet in some places and as shallow as four feet in others.

Kiptopeke State Park

1949- 1964 the Virginia Ferry Corporation owned the land and ran a ferry service from here.

These are the “Concrete Fleet” boats. They were WWII concrete ships made of concrete that were used in the war and then placed here as a storm break. Real concrete ships…and they floated!

On to Delaware tomorrow!.

  1. Love to hearing about your your travels. I went on a lake tour in Australia in a concrete boat ~ it really did float! Hugs Judy
