Vagabond Tales- A Yaktrax Mother’s Day

The plan was to hike to Emerald Lake today! The weather was crisp but the sun was out! Driving up we saw a few elk. I am afraid my pictures weren’t very good. They were walking in the woods so they were well camouflaged.

Camouflage is a funny thing. There were at least three elk moving in a line but I can’t find them here.
On the way up, we stopped at a couple overlooks!

When we arrived at the trail head the ranger station clued us into the reason it was more difficult to get full lungs of oxygen! Check the altitude.
4 feet of packed snow! Luckily Harry had a pair of Yaktrax in the car and he played Prince Charming to my Cinderella!
Unfortunately, it had been a while since either of us needed them so he put them on backwards. For half the trip they didn’t grip like they should have. Ha! Harry said if I had walked the trail backwards, I wouldn’t have had as much trouble.
And we’re off!
We Climbed and slid up to Nymph Lake. One of two lakes on the way to Emerald. We enjoyed lunch on a couple rocks by the lake’s edge. It wasn’t as cold as you would think!
It was here I got a direction adjustment! Made all the difference!

The second lake we were going to was called, Dream lake. Dream wasn’t in the cards as it was getting steeper and steeper and people were slipping and sliding all around us with tennis shoes on. One young man had brought his own boom box on his back so we could all appreciate the loud music! NOT! We made the decision to be content with our first lake! We had passed a Ranger and he wasn’t very encouraging for us to go farther. At our age, we don’t bounce as well.

This is Bear Lake. Not much of a trek for this one…but it was snow laden!
A few feet lower in elevation, the streams were full of snow melt.
Coming out of the park we spied some elk resting
in a field, in front of some homes.
Temperatures were dropping and snow was flying so we came back to our campground and Onyx.

Several of the campground/ RV Parks have had nice dog runs! Onyx particularly has enjoyed this one.

We found out Onyx was correct! We have not been camping alone! We are in the middle of a prairie dog town!

Kind of cute in a squirrelly kind of way but boy,
do they wreck havoc on your yard or a field!

Very easy question tonight…What animal was camouflaged in today’s photos? Remember, both Ken Flinders and Kaitlyn Dorr may not enter this one as they have already won a contest this trip. And go! We will be awaiting your answers!
