Today we hiked to Hickman Bridge!

Another beautiful day but the sky is filled with rain that is predicted for tomorrow. So plenty of clouds and no blue skies. It didn’t seem as warm so that made for a comfortable hike. This trek was not as long as yesterday’s but there was more elevation and slippery rocks to scramble over. Spring has certainly begun here!

The Globemallow was blooming everywhere. They only get six to seven inches of rain a year so it is amazing the variety of flowers that can flourish here.
I think this bloom is a red hedgehog cactus. On our way up, it hadn’t even started to bloom but on the way down they were glorious!
I think this is milk-vetch. The vegetation looks like the crown-vetch we have along the freeway in Tennessee, except the flower is a periwinkle blue!
This ice cold water was the beginning and ending of the hike!
Much of the hike was done over rocks like this! Beautiful, huh?
You can see the sky is not brilliant blue like yesterday’s sky!
These water filled holes that have been formed by erosion are called tanks!
We couldn’t resist stopping and peering in the windows this one room schoolhouse. Did you know that I taught in Eberle, Illinois in a three room school house? Grades 1-3. I had the second graders. Some of my students did not have running water in their homes.
Who is in the window looking at me?

We stopped to see the petroglyph panel. It was so nice. The boardwalk along the wall made for easy walking and viewing! I love petroglyphs…some people say it was the way these people communicated and some say it was the first forms of art. I think it was probably both!

The picture in the top right shows you some of the wall
we had to try to spot the markings!
This place is certainly a rock hounds idea of heaven!
Our last view of Capitol Reef.
We have some friends and their three daughters, who are camping in this same area but not on the same days as we are…we should have planned that better. But we have done the next best thing and we hid a geo-cache treasure for them to find when they arrive. Let’s hope no one finds it before they do!
If you EVER get to Torrey, Utah you can’t miss the Hunt and Gather Restaurant.

We have not had one meal, not breakfast, not lunch or dinner out but when we saw the crowds here we just had to stop. We needed a reservation and it was a bit pricy but the food was delicious! We had an asparagus appetizer and we both had blackened prime rib. I almost have a whole take home meal in the refrigerator left over from tonight, here in the camper as I write. It was delicious but enough for two of us!

Your question for contest number 2 is…To what bridge in Capital Reef did we hike today? And go! Let’s swamp us with entries!

    1. Dan, you wouldn’t believe this place! Had gardens around the place so you know everything would be from their land in the summer! Their chef was top notch! Harry had one of the best crem brûlée he’s ever had for dessert!

  1. That looks like a beautiful park with great rock formations. I know four kids that would have devoured those steaks without leftovers 😀. Looks delicious. Adding my name into the contest : Hickman Bridge.

    1. Good Answer! Your name has been added to the drawing for contest number 2! They looked like steak but were prime rib, if you can believe it! Blackened prime rib!
