Vagabond Tales- Visit the Green Table, Better Known as Mesa Verde

We headed to Mesa Verde today. While teaching third grade there was a whole chapter dedicated to the Anasazi, the culture, customs and geographic area. I fell in love! They are now referred to as Ancestral Pueblo Peoples. Our first family trip with the family after our sons had married was to Durango and Mesa Verde. We made such great memories. We thought it would be fun to revisit. Surprisingly some things had changed. Certain early ruins have been actually covered within buildings that can be closed down in the winter and are now protected from eroding weather. They were not giving tours into the actual dwellings like we did last time. I think they will start doing that again in June. Due to Covid and early spring many things are not available. But the weather today was 55 degrees and warmer in the sun and any more, we don’t do well with the weather and crowds that we might experience in June.

These are the constructions under cover, depicting all the way from early pit house to the dwellings where they began to use stone masonry rather than wood and mud.
This is the Square Tower House. It is called an alcove dwelling
This is the Sun Temple. Built sometime in the 1200s and was an important part of the cliff dwellings. No evidence of roofing or household artifacts here. It is a D shaped building. They really don’t know exactly what it’s purpose was. It remains a mystery.
This is the Cliff Palace. The panorama below will show you more of the community and the shear size of the cliff. 35 cliff dwellings and if I recall right the radio guide said over 5000 archeological sites have been documented in this wall.
This raven took us by surprise! We kept hearing a sound like your vehicle makes when you check if it is locked…whoop, whoop. He sounded just like that. I know ravens have a huge diversity of sounds but I don’t know if they can mimic other things in their environment.
Mesa Verde had a large forest fire in 2002. This shows how long it takes to regenerate these areas after a fire… This is 18 years later.
Back at the camper, Onyx remains the vigilant goose chaser!

  1. Those are great memories. It was a great Dorr Family (1st) Vacation with Ryan and Leslie living out in Denver. Having Nicholas (age 16 months) was adventurous on that trip, and being 6 months pregnant. Great times – still one of our favorites! Neat to see the pics of Mesa Verde again.

  2. So interesting. I also am a fan of the Anasazi and Bandolier (sp?) State Park is a favorite! Joan
