Vagabond Tales- Get a “Little” Mud on the Tires

April 16, 2021 Larkin, Kansas

Having lived in both middle and western Kansas in the past, we thought we had seen it all until one of friends and followers mentioned Jayhawks and Chalktalk. We did a bit of research and found out some great information on how Kansas University got their mascot name…Jayhawks. This is the website that can provide you with more information if you want to read for yourself. It is quite a good little read. https://kuhistory.ku.edu/articles/blackmars-origin-jayhawk.

Amidst our research we found an interesting place we could visit in Kansas and not too far out of the way on private property that was called The Chalk Pyramids or Monument Rocks, one of the eight wonders of Kansas. So nothing related to Jayhawks or Chalktalk but…it got us digging up information and…the good thing…we came back alive by the Grace of God, and we are tickled we took the detour although Harry says he will be digging mud off the camper for years.

This is how we started the day…perhaps the rain might have played a part in our decision to go forward to see this natural wonder but….Nope! Didn’t cross our minds.
This is Jayhawk Road -the county, gravel road, we were promised which would take us 7 miles to see the Monument Rocks. The farther we went the fewer pieces of gravel we found.
Frankly, I did not take any pictures of the worst part of the road because I was clutching the door and console with a death grip, my eyes were closed praying , and my legs were crossed trying not to pee my pants from fright! Harry said, “ It’s like four wheeling except with a truck pulling a camper.” I reminded him…that was eight wheeling.
Chalk Pyramids or Monument Rocks rose out of the prairies
of Kansas before us and truly blew us away!
Harry and Onyx stayed with the car since we were afraid
to drive in for fear we would get stuck or worse, roll it! You can see one person braved it earlier in the day by the tracks.
The stormy skies really make for a dramatic backdrop!
Two remarkable things…it is on private property and they are allowing travelers to visit at no charge… and…it is in the prairie, lands of Kansas. Amazing!
As we left…there was a whole other set of these monuments.

They stand 70 feet tall, because of the myriad of fossils found in these formations it is thought this is the remains of a seabed. The material is said to be wind blown chalk. It really felt pretty hard to walk on and I only got my boots a bit muddy.

Under the camper…much worse but I
didn’t get down under to take those photos.

Campsite…$10 dollars a night…electricity, no water

  1. WOW!! The Monument Rocks look amazing! Not something you expect to see in the prairies of middle America!

  2. Hey….ya’ll wanna go muddin’?

Nah…we got this thing attached to the back

    It don matter…it’ll be fine.

    1. This one, Dad was freaked! I mentioned possibly skipping it when we saw the road but …we turned down the road and our fate was sealed. The good Lord was with us! You know how I love 4 wheeling!

  3. Good Lord! I don’t even want to think about what could have happened! But what a surprise. Absolutely stunning in the middle of the prairie.

    1. You can believe we were both thinking about how we were going to get out of the pickle we were in and how dangerous of a position we had put ourselves! Did you know We rolled our first camper in Maine? Not our fault that time but this would have been all on us! So thankful for God’s Providence! Thanks for following Mary Ellen!❤️

  4. Glad my comment about Rock Chaulk and Jayhawks resulted in an adventure instead of a disaster. Nice photos of Monuments!

    1. Yes, thank you, Dan! It wouldn’t have been your fault if it did turn disastrous but oh what a surprise at the end of a harrowing ride out! Not to mention the ride back to the highway. Pretty spectacular! Kind of reminded us of Stonehenge! We learned county roads in Kansas are not Tennessee county roads.

  5. Well…
Leave it to you and Harry to add adventure to your already adventure trail. So glad that you made it safely out of there. We love the pictures and the stories. Keep them coming!
    Stay safe
    Love you guys
