Vagabond Tales- Manhattan Kansas- The Little Apple 🍎

Harry does the state sticker honors! Remember…we must have camped in the state before it can be placed on it. Driving through doesn’t count. Thus, the empty few states on our Eastern section on the map.

I don’t know how old you have to be to visit a place from your past and absolutely have it wash over you with a flood of memories of people, happenings, times and places. For us, after 43 years…today driving around town, we were awash with remembrances.

It has been over 43 years since we traveled west to live in Manhattan as a family of three plus a Scottie dog. We would buy our first home…we would bring our second son into the world…we, three would star in a centennial city outdoor drama…Harry would interview several notable people, including Red Skelton…we would start a married couples group in a church that had never had one before in their history…I would learn to weave from a master 83 year old weaver etc. etc. We had a rich life here. Found the people of the heartland to be friendly and generous with their affection and time. This is where we broadened our foundations and learned to lean on each other and God.

This is the first house we ever owned. We remembered the yard being much steeper and everything larger than it really is! Being the very first people to own this house, we put in the yard, trees, fence etc. And it is for sale again. Wonder how many families have live there over the years?
Spring in Manhattan…Riley County Court House
Spring in the Flint Hills
Flint Hills Discovery Center…
We were especially impressed with the use of building
materials by the architect to depict earth strata. You may have to enlarge the picture to see it but it is genius.

They had several awesome interactive videos on the Flint Hills, an underground room with roots hanging down to show how long the roots must go to get water in the prairie, a Native American and Buffalo display…if you are going through Kansas and have a couple hours, we highly recommend this as an educational break! Let’s all be lifelong learners!

The underground room.
Actual root systems! Man, weeding would be a bear if you had these grasses in your garden and didn’t want them there.
We learned how fire in the Flint Hills keeps the prairie strong!
This atrium was very tall and so they had this rocket laying right in the middle of the floor. Harry couldn’t resist!
Our campground is directly below this dam.
On top of the dam overlooking the campground. Our site to the top far right.
Tuttle Creek Lake being held back by the dam.
The back side of the dam.
This trail was full of cottonwoods…I guess that is why they named it that.
I just love the root structure and thick bark of this cottonwood!

On the road tomorrow…western Kansas!
