Vagabond Tales -Soon to Be Evacuated

April 13, 2021- There are surprises you encounter with each new campsite. This one presented several! We are camping in Missouri at the Trail of Tears State Park. This park is where the Cherokee tribes in 1838-1839, during a terribly harsh winter were forced to cross the Mississippi and on to Oklahoma.

The wild phlox, redbuds and dogwood were in full bloom!

Sooo…the picture below shows how close we are camping to the Mississippi.

Great flat site…didn’t even have to do much leveling.

No gate house presented itself as we drove in, so we headed right to our site. Surprise number 1- In a matter of minutes, after arriving in the camping area a Ranger flew in on his four by four to ask us how long we would be staying. We said one night and then we would be off. He said…”Good! Although checkout is at 2:00pm, you need to be out of here by 9:00 am. The Mississippi is rising and they are evacuating us in the morning.”😲

Placing the Missouri sticker on our map. Surprise number 2 and 3- we are by a train track that has run 3 times from both directions and we have only been here a couple of hours, And 3- Barges make a lot of noise going up river…horns and loud engines. Tonight and tomorrow should prove to be very interesting! We did not unhook so leaving will be quick tomorrow!
It is super breezy near the Mississippi.
A cute game they had set up to play in the shared activity area in our loop. Harry beat me!

    1. Amy… I have been meaning to ask…Sometime Harry and I would like to get with you and Bill and talk about your lake adventure and all that led up to your decisions. When we get home…I will get a hold of you…maybe we could get together for lunch or dinner in our home!

  1. Looks really pretty but I am glad you won’t be there when the flooding starts. Stay safe and have a WONDERFUL trip! 💜
