Vagabond Tales-Rest Day at the Springs

March 25-Did we actually have a spa day? No…not really. We had Hot Springs on our last National Park list for this trip and even though we knew they were closed. Camping near-by, meant we could, at least, drive by and view the attractions. The book we have been following…one that Jim and Jana Williams suggested, Your Guide to the National Parks , by Michael Joseph Oswald, said and I quote… “ Hot Springs isn’t the sort of park you should drive seven hours out of your way to visit.” It was on our way home and we had a rest day so we added to our list.

The first bath houses were nothing more than makeshift canvas and wood structures built over openings cut in the rock but by the 1920’s the bath houses had been rebuilt and attracted people of all walks of life. Doctors prescribed strict bathing routines to cure various diseases.

It took us back to a bygone era of simpler times when a trip to the baths was good for whatever ailed you. Our walk on the Promenade was pretty special, spring was in boom, very few others shared the walkway and we could dream of a time when the word pandemic hadn’t entered our vocabulary!

Note the steam where the water leaves the ground and makes its way down to the pool. We couldn’t keep our hand in the water very long as the temperature runs around 143 degrees Fahrenheit .
We saw a lady with milk jugs collecting mineral rich water from this fountain.
This picture is for Harry’s brother, Brian who has played many a concert from Bandstands all over Ohio. The bands at Hot Springs sat up here on the bandstand and played as they watched the men and women stroll along the Promenade..
Harry said…oooh, they have a water break they must not know about. I said, look at the steam…the springs have broken through and indeed, the water was very hot…just along the walkway.
I guess a lot of areas had trouble with bootleggers.
Three Sisters Springs are located in the Lake Ouachita State Park and the waters flow down into the lake. We had no cellular service at our camp site but we walked a mile down here which was a “hot spot”, to call my mother, She has been highly concerned about us.
A picture from my phone booth by the springs .

  1. Love all of the pictures! You, Harry and Onyx are looking good! I really hate that things have been closed as you travel home, but at least you got most of your trip in and Harry has managed to navigate so you have somewhere to stay. You guys be safe coming in and enjoy your quarantine when you get home! This virus has most everyone going crazy. I am sure your Mom is worried sick about you all.
I have not been able to find a loaf of bread here for the past week. The bread and milk shelves are completely empty. Also toilet paper? Have no idea what that is about. No bleach, no sanitizer and the stores are limiting items that you buy because people are buying it up and hording items? That is what the news is saying. A lot going on!
    We love you guys!
    Praying for continued safe travels!

    1. We have been fortunate with things in stores along the way. We just take what they have and then cook what I can do with limited supplies. You know I can do that based on the All American Pizza.😋. Surprisingly, we still have a few things still in our freezer in the camper.😍
