Vagabond Tales- No Instruments, No Bats, No Problem

We’ll do a two day catch up …March 1 and 2. Sunday we woke up and had some wonderful coffee roasted by our son Chris. He set us up for at least half our trip with fresh roasted coffee beans. So yummy! Then on to church …we chose Sunset Church of Christ. Great message and very friendly congregation but was our very first non-instrumental church. Nice for a change, simply voices worshiping God and singing old Hymns.

Chris’ special roast.
We loved that this church looks like some of the homes here, Adobe .

After church, we spent the day at the camper with Onyx. We hiked some local trails and I fixed a big dinner, of Creamy Chicken Piccata with a salad and a pineapple angel food cake. Ended the day with a sunset over Brantley Lake.

CARLSBAD CAVERNS *** New Contest

Acquiring tickets for a ranger led tour of the cave was difficult. Nothing was available until today at 10:00 this am. So we set out at 8:30 am and I can tell you, I was not excited about another cave (We have done a lot…even in other countries) but Carlsbad is not your average run of the mill cavern. So glad we came! We went on a guided tour of the Kings Palace and then get this…they allow you to hike the big room all by yourselves 1 1/2 miles. So very cool!

The Brazilian Free-Tailed bats have not arrived yet so we were unable to watch them leave the cave for feeding. Disappointing but…timing is everything. They are still enjoying their time in South America.

The caverns are directly below where I am taking this panorama.
Thirty miles of explored cavern. We did not take in all 30 miles.
We were so thankful for these elevators! Can you imagine going down that far by ladder, rope or stairs?
No words for the beauty!
Easy trails to walk. But we were told the bats
would not all be here until late April.
Top right…This is the 90 foot metal and wood ladder cowboy, Jim White the first real cave enthusiast would use to go down in the cave. If you were invited to go with him he would lower you down 170 feet in a bucket once used to collect bat guano from the cave
Formation named…Rock of Ages!

We saw a presentation by the Apache Native Americans on the many uses of the important yucca plant.; basket making, sandals, ropes, belts, food , thread for sewing and would you believe it…we found something new…toothbrushes?

And now for your contest question- what picture on this page could I not have possibly taken a picture of live? Submit your answer by Midnight Mountain Standard time Tuesday, March 3.

  1. Totally amazing. Loved the old bats. We are too. !! Azaleas are blooming here in Houston so hope you see some on your way. Hugs.. Mary Ellen

      1. As you know we used to live in Maine and we would be waiting patiently for the Hydrangeas. We live on the 26th floor of a highrise now with just a balcony garden. Paul says I put so many plants out there, it looks like Maine in the summer! Send pics as you go! Stay safe. M.E.

  2. I’m gonna say that shot of those bats. It ain’t April! That cave looks very cool. I believe it was a cave very similar which I turned into a toilet as a small child 😀

    1. Ha! Ha! Yes, that was Wind Cave. Our Ranger had a whole fanny pack full of plastic bags for just such an occasion…and he showed them to us today so we would all visit the potty first. We have your vote registered!

  3. The Bat Picture is the one that doesn’t belong! Plus….. If you were that close to the bats during that picture, there might have been some screaming going on!

  4. I say the “Bats” picture. Since we are not near April as of yet. Great info. on the cave and the pictures. I’m learning so much history from your blog…love it. We love you!

  5. Love the photos of the caves……absolutely beautiful!!

The picture of the versus the one you could not have taken live. Not April…no bars yet!

  6. The bats!
Great, great pictures! I can’t imagine seeing that cave, because pictures never do justice to what the eyes can see. But you do a fabulous job taking us on this journey with you guys! The sunset was breath taking! Keep up the great work. We all are loving your travels!
    Love you guys!
