Vagabond Tales- Wandering Fort Wilkins

September 6- We had a nice quiet day of wandering Fort Wilkins. Walked right out the door of our camper and took a winding trail from our campground across Fanny Hooe Creek and ran right into the fort. Onyx was tickled to go along.

In the 1830’s copper was discovered on the peninsula. Then by the early 40’s, people were coming in droves trying to get in on the copper boom! The US government, concerned about the unruly miners and Native Americans, established Fort Wilkins in 1844.

If you stand still enough, you can hear the bugle and fife mess call on the wind.
The buildings were in remarkable shape! All open for wandering guests.

Even on Isle Royal,, you could see these abandoned copper mining pits dotted everywhere along the countryside.

My very first candy store, where they made their own fudge on the marble slab was in Copper Harbor well over 58 years ago with my parents and my brother and sister on a working vacation to Isle Royal. Guess it was too much to ask to find it still a going concern. Although our search did come up with some fudge…it was definitely not the same or as good as I remember.

Travel Day September 7…Trouble with tongue Jack will stop at an RV store in Duluth, MN.

  1. You jogged a fun memory for me about Sleeping Bear Sand dunes. I visited it twice, once as a child with my family and again with Dan as a newlywed. The dunes were not as high as I remembered, but they were much harder to climb!
