Vagabond Tales- Enjoy Wurlitzer Wednesday

February 7, 2024. Skidaway Island State Park , Savannah, Georgia

Late Wednesday morning, Harry and I headed over to the Lucas Theater in downtown Savannah. Every Wednesday, they have a free tour and Wurlitzer concert. If you are in the area…it is a really fun hour and really takes you back to the era of silent movies and how theaters and their talented organists enlivened the show with music! Most films did not come with musical scores and the organ masters, in most cases only had two viewings to plan their musical score.

The beauty of the Lucas Theater simply cannot be captured. The colors and carvings remind me of Wedgwood china. The top right picture is the stage from the balcony. That white organ is truly a showpiece, visually and musically!
Notice the holes I have arrowed. At the very top of each side of the balcony circular openings have been drilled into the walls, making this the first building in Savannah to have air conditioning in 1927. Refrigerated air was pumped through the 83 holes. This was ground breaking ingenuity and to get this accomplished, they hoisted large blocks of ice by rope and pulley and a team of mules into the attic above and blew air across them
This is the original 1925 pipe organ that was found, and reassembled and refurbished. It boasts 1,620 pipes.
Just a little snippet to show how he introduced different sounds.
And then he used it in a number…
Had to stop by Forest Gump’s special square. “Life is Like A Box of Chocolates”. Harry is missing his chocolate box.
A delightful lunch at Collins Cafe. Quinoa salad has some of the same properties of kale salad.😁
Back to the camper and our pretty special watch dog, Finn, we head off for a swamp walk. This pond may look slimy but in reality, it is covered with itsy-bitsy duckweed.

Travel Thursday with a stop at the post office for help with our Valentine’s delivery. If you are one of our kids or grands…close your eyes… this is a spoiler!

Truffles and chocolate covered Oreos and a few surprises.

  1. Wow. What a story of that theater. Such intricate detail. We never saw it when we lived near. Thanks!!! M.E.

      1. No. It would already have been done. We lived in Beaufort from I think 2009-2013 part time. That’s when we spent a lot of time in Savannah and Charleston. Too bad we didn’t see it!!

  2. Love Savannah but did not know about the theater!! Very cool.
Also my great aunt played piano for the silent movies in Sebring Ohio. but I guessed that the movie would have come with a score. Guess not! So interesting!!

The Valentine treats look amazing!! That’s what Harry should have been holding!

    1. I remember going to the Movie”The Ten Commandments” at a theater that had an organ. It was played before, during intermission and after but not during the movie. Must have been the tail end of an era!
