Vagabond Tales- See First Hand the Devastating Effects of Hurricane Ian

February 11, 2023. Myakka River State Park Sarasota, Florida Site 42

I guess, in the past, I have focused on the effects of a hurricane on the human population and the structures where they live and work. While I know that is exactly where my thoughts, prayers and aide should rest…today, we saw first hand the ravages it brings on the woodland landscape, as well as, the animals who live there. It creates a new topography and challenges the wildlife to adapt and find new places to nest and feed.

Although, I didn’t capture their photos…there were workers with garbage bags walking throughout the jungle forest picking up windfall trash that blew in this fall. The magnitude of the cleanup that is still ongoing is sobering. Today we also saw new roofs going up on out buildings in the park proper.
Their canopy bridge was not structurally strong and is waiting for engineers to make recommendations.
All of these constructions are closed until further study or
work, including the long bird watching boardwalk below.
You can barely see the egrets in the marsh in this picture but it gives you the idea of the terrain they are feeding in.
While I was taking this picture I heard a loud slap and
everyone on the bridge with me either made a cry or took in a breath.
One of the alligators had just caught his egret lunch.
Just a quick picture of Harry and Finn, who is anxiously wanting to go further on down that trail.
