Vagabond Tales- Buffalo Horns,Blue Skies and an Avalanche
September 16, 2022. West Glacier, Montana West Glacier RV Site 10
We got up this morning and were greeted with blue skies! Time for a hike. As you know, dogs cannot hike in the park so we set Finn up in his portable/collapsible crate in an air conditioned camper. Give him some chew toys and usually a frozen peanut butter ball with carrot or other veggies in it. I will share a picture of it at another time for inquiring minds. He was short on things to chew so we broke out one of his souvenirs…a Buffalo horn.
He was so excited about this we thought we could skip the peanut butter ball. No sooner had we left the camper when he set up a howling we had never heard before…ever. After all, he had his music playing and a new Buffalo horn plus some older toys.
I ran in…made up a ball for him…it wouldn’t be frozen but it might do. Sure enough nary a peep out of him after I gave it to him. Harry says we spoil him. But in a campground, you cannot have a howling, barking dog irritating the other campers. And we were leaving earlier in the morning. Oh, well! Perhaps he is spoiled!
The plan…Hike to Avalanche Lake and coming back finish up with Trail of the Cedars. It was categorized as easy but it did get more strenuous than this. I think they make it so easy coming out of the parking lot, that all people, whatever shape they are in, at least start it.Love those blue skies!
At this point, I should say at our age, sometimes we wake up with a stiff joint or two and we just work it out. Harry had been waking up for the last couple of days with the arch of his foot hurting and he was able to work it out. We set off on our hike and it was obvious his foot was not going to become comfortable enough to hike the full way. We kept hoping it would settle in but to no avail.
I had suggested Harry might have the beginnings of Plantar fasciitis a couple days before but of course, we did not want it to be that! I had had it a few years back and had to tape mine and purchase shoes that helped. It was about here Harry told me to go ahead and he would wait for me. I was torn but having sat out many a trail when my foot was hurting, I decided to go on and finish the hike. If this had not been such a well traveled and populated trail, I would not have gone alone. I knew Harry would be fine. He could watch the people go by, enjoy the woods and rest his foot for getting back. There still was a bit of smoke haze but oh, how wonderful to see blue skies for a change!I ended up being the photographer for a bunch of women my daughter-in-laws ages who had traveled here together! They offered to take my photo. The lake was a beautiful treat at the end of the trail! I turned around and headed back to see how Harry and his foot was faring. He had only moved a few yards away from where I had left him for a more comfortable log! This looks like a cute place to swim, right off of the trail!I wanted you to see this purple rock! They are all over this area and so pretty! I have done a bit of research and think it is…Argillite, a sedimentary rock . Both Harry and I had a semester in college of geology but that doesn’t make us experts, by any means!Lake McDonald…our first view with a blue sky!Got home and fixed iron skillet chicken and asparagus bundles for dinner. We will have left overs tomorrow evening! All of you cooks out there…do you know this trick for getting garlic skins off the garlic clove? Our granddaughter, Graycen taught me how this past summer when she and her sister Hattie were at the house. Separate the cloves, cut the base off where it attaches, run hot tap water in a bowl when you start your preparation, and float them in it until you need to mince them…those skins come right off!
And now what you have all been waiting for…the contest winners!
Three winners in celebration of our camping in 48 states milestone!
