Vagabond Tales- Almost Get Skunked Hunting Elk

April 30, 2022

Headed out this morning to another overlook! Love how well this shot shows how the river oxbows. The picture below is a closeup of that center dome in this picture and the towers/ chimneys that rise up from it!
Another climbing challenge but…not for us!
Right above this overlook they have a zip line. Today, they were making the first dry run of the season to check things out. We tried to talk Ruth Ann into trying it out but for some reason…she refused!
We met two couples from Dave and Ruth Ann’s church for a lunch at the Rhododendron Lodge Restaurant at the park. It boasts quite the view!
We set out at 4:00 on this bus full of people to see if we could find some elk.

Somewhere between 2012 and 2014, 71 elk were relocated to Buchanan County from the Rocky Mountains. They have largely remained where they were released and have grown to a herd of almost 400. Interstate Breaks State Park takes visitors out every Saturday for a bag lunch dinner and to see if the majestic animals can be spotted. The elk management has been trying to eradicate the Autumn Olive invasive shrub that has taken over the hillsides! We saw a lot of earth moving equipment and huge hills that had been reseeded with wild grasses elk love to eat. This herd is not fed by the forestry service but must be able to sustain themselves on what the land can provide.

For a while we thought this sign might be the only elk we spotted.
Two weeks ago…this hillside was completely covered in Autumn Olive shrubs.

The whole 30- 45 minute ride to see the elk, we were regaled with pictures and stories of full 100 count herds and large bull elk stories and photos from last fall’s treks. I say…go in the fall for up close and personal pictures of elk. In the spring, they seem to be more skittish and focused on calving and the bulls are shedding their large antlers so aren’t as impressive.

So….not really skunked but if you had seen
the photos from past tours, you would have felt disappointed, too.
Common Winter Cress with the guys taking in the view before them.
Probably, one of my favorite finds…a Killdeer nest!
They were almost stepped upon!
