Vagabond Tales- Climb Through the Notches

April, 30, 2022

We set out in search of the Notches! The mountaineering couple from yesterday highly recommended this trail! RuthAnn stayed back at their motor home to rest her knee. She is awaiting surgery.
One of my mother’s favorite spring flowers…the violet. Did I share with you the story about my mother being homesick at nurses training in Chicago in the 1940’s? She was missing her Mom and after class one day she was walking in a park and noticed mounds of violets. She had an idea that she would pick a bouquet and wrap them in a wet cloth and mail them to her mom. They arrived somewhat bedraggled but still full of love!
The towers of rock begin.
As we came around the corner we heard a small voice calling, “Hello, Hello.” Two women hikers had lost their map and needed help getting headed in the right direction. Here is a tip for you…If you are headed out on a hiking excursion…take a picture of your paper map or one posted on the park’s public service board. Even if there is no signal…you can still access your photos. We had them take a picture of Harry’s map and they were off!
This hike equals many hikes we have done around our National parks and this one is right in our back yard. Very memorable!

Widely used for medicinal purposes by the Native Americans!
The Notches… the temperature dropped 10 degrees when we entered.

  1. That’s a great idea about the map. Wish I had thought of that back in Maine….The notches is astonishing. Just a little scary (except for the violets). Carry on! M.E.

  2. Your pictures of The Notches reminded us that we had been to Breaks Interstate Park many years ago. (About the time our youngest was leaving home.) As luck would have it, we found a record of that visit in the first (#15 of 55) scrapbook volumes Dan searched. It was May 1992–30 years ago! Hiking through those narrow passages among towering stone walls made the adventure memorable.
