Vagabond Tales-The Only Thing Worse Than Standing in Lines …Is Standing in Lines in the Wind and Rain
March 30, 2022
Yesterday, I was unaware of the NO picture or videoing in the homes rule, so…oops I posted one of an interior that I shouldn’t have. Sorry! Today, there were signs in two of the residences allowing photography so these I am using today are legal! I know you were worrying about that.
The weather was warm, in the 70’s today but unfortunately the weatherman predicted high winds and rain . This guy hit it on the head..we had both! We chose not to dally with an umbrella but brave it with our waterproof windbreakers and that was probably a good decision! We saw many turned inside out and broken umbrella ribs throughout the day.
#1 Water Street. First house of the day and…first ever masonry home raised in the Charleston area, taking over 21/2 years. The owners were tired of remodeling/ repairing after hurricanes …they had been hit twice in six years. The decision was made to have the home lifted. For those of you intrigued by such things, here is a fascinating 1/12 minute time-lapse of the house raising !https://youtu.be/_C_Flkl-VGETop… left to right…Living room, Harry looking into a door, we were to later find out was a view into the new area created by the lifting. Bottom…2 little doors placed under the staircase …cute storage, Dining roomTop: Two little cubbies we walked by going into the kitchen . Note the backsplash with the wine corks and a cigar container. Bottom: family room with a porch in the direction the docent was showing. These pictures show the last straw which led them to raise their home.New space under the original home. You are looking at their two cisterns, used to capture roof water for their gardens. This home was right across from #1 Water Street. In their back garden, they installed a storm wall, which is supposed to save them from flooding again. This is an expensive remedy but not nearly as expensive as going to the length of lifting a home. Neither of these fixes have been through a storm with the tidal flooding they have experienced in the past. The third home was right around the corner. It was originally a business but now turned single family dwelling. This is the original height. This was also where the rain and wind was insistent on wheedling into every dry piece of clothing it could find. When we finally arrived at the door we had a bit of cover from the weather. I thought this door knocker on the double cross door looked like the Lion of Judah on a cross.Look at the size of this rug! Purchased by the owners three years ago when Chrysler building in New York City was going through a revamping.Definitely not our favorite house but an interesting story…the green unit went on the market today at 9:00 am. By 3 o’clock, it had new owners whose bank account is lighter by $3,700,000. I wish I could have photographed this one… a cotton warehouse reimagined as home! This was our favorite! Circular door entrance mirrored by two more large circular openings…one through the living space and then one out through and into the gardens. So gorgeous,Tomorrow we fly home…we’ll not quite literally. We’ve had a wonderful week with friends, exploring new areas and Charleston, who never disappoints!
