Vagabond Tales- Funky Art
February 19, 2022
Visiting Railroad Square’s Art Center gave us an eyeful! Colorful murals abounded, as well as incense, crystals, framed bugs, antiques and strange community theaters! It was so eclectic, it made for a charming and interesting morning!
Do you see anyone you know in this picture? An astronaut mural photographed for my dear friend, Debbie! As a single mother, teacher, she always had the dream to work for NASA. With determination and hard work, she saw her dream come to fruition. She worked in Washington D.C. for the National Science Teacher’s Association with offices at NASA for a number of years. She was the Manager for the NASA Explorer School’s Program…Facilitating in the educating of classroom teachers through out the US in astronomy and space travel, she touched so many more students than she could have from her own classroom.Watching a mural in progress! We observed an oil painting class taking place. It was a small area for that many artists but it looked like fun! While traveling, I haven’t tried painting…the logistics of all the supplies and the drying issues have always stopped me.We purchased a little something from this man at an antique shop. At check-out Harry reminisced with him about fairs and that square board in the upper left. Having never seen one before, they shared with me that it was a type of betting game at fairs. You would throw your coin at the board that was laying on a table, and if it sat directly in the center they would get the equivalent money…if it touched the line at all…your coin belonged to the Carnival guy! Then he closed his eyes and shared how his mom would make his Birthday cake when he was a boy, burying 8 or 9 Liberty half dollars in the frosting. The kids were warned to be on the look out while they ate. What they found…they kept. Now that was a pretty random story, just out of the blue but I find, I too, have memories pop into my brain and it is always nice to have someone there to share the remembrance. On their door they had a sign that said… Community Theater for the Weird Community… That might include us…I am not sure if we would be prepared for it!We picked up lunch at the Crumb Box GastGarden. Harry had their famous meatball sandwich known far and wide as the most delicious meatball sandwich going! Harry said it was. The owner took our order, climbed up the caboose steps, cooked our meal and then ran it to us outside under the awning. He said it was just him, 90% of the time! Crazy! I asked him how many steps he walked in a day. Said he needed to buy a pedometer. My phone does it for me! Can you read Harry’s eyes? “You’re not taking a picture of me eating, are you? Oh, yes you are! “
Lake Jackson Mounds Archeological State Park
We spent the late afternoon crawling around these historical mounds. A trail to the old Butler Mill Ruins afforded us a brief but treacherous hike. Part of it was washed out and some sections of it had a very rooty surface, so much so, some of the roots had been painted yellow. Today the park site preserves the remains of six of the seven known earthen temple mounds in this area in Florida. We climbed two.
The red trilliums were blooming! Trillium maculatum-spotted leaves
We are on the road again tomorrow! We’ll talk to you from another campground tomorrow evening!
