Vagabond Tales- Hike the Fort Braden Trails

February 16, 2022

75° and the perfect day to walk the Central Loop at Fort Braden.
We followed the Tennessee Orange trail blazes.

I was taking pictures of all of these big and small natural shelters for critters, when Harry said they could be shelters for trolls, too. Oh, really! But low and behold, sure enough we came across a troll. They really can house grouchy trolls! Who knew?

I am reminded of a story, that Ranger Marty Silver ( a pretty famous forest Ranger, around our neck of the woods) shared. He like me, always wondered what was living in holes in the trees in the woods. Instead of just wondering…he would poke a long stick down them and kind of stir it around, hoping he would scare some animal out. One time he got his wish…he riled up a hornet or bee’s nest that was down one of those cavities. That ended his search to find out who lived in those holes.

Look closely…you will see Harry was right, when he said trolls used them.
They have some cool fungus in Florida!
There were some balance beams placed over muddy areas. Where are our two gymnasts, Graycen and Hattie when they are needed?
These streams in Florida would be favorite for our sons, back in the day…we always let the guys take their shoes off and wade when they were younger and the bottom of this little stream is nothing but white sand…not the usual muddy or rocky bottom. This is a perfect example of an oxbow stream.
In most of these parks, the hiking trails are narrow, requiring us to walk single file. Harry and Onyx have always taken the lead. They checked things out and gave me time for photographing findings along the way. It is a lonely sight to see him ahead of me…alone!
Much of the trail was along this pretty lake!
The first violet of the season for me! It is a favorite of my mom’s! When she was in nurses training she even picked a bouquet and sent it via the mail, to her mother. She shared they didn’t make it there in great shape, but the thought was there!

Back at the Camper

Our neighbors across the street have this cute little library set up! I love it! Something we might be able to do with our excess books!
The resident alarm clock and his mate. Just wanders around the campground!
Harry had a neighbor wanting to borrow some of his
peanuts! And so he shared!

  1. What a beautiful spot! When we lived in Maine, there was a hiking trail that started at the town hall in Harpswell and it was marked all along with trolls and mushrooms. They kept us on the right track!!! Hugs. M.E.
