Vagabond Tales-Sweet Frigid Home Alabama

January 22, 2022

After a bit of a bump in the road which I explained in our previous post…we started our journey. I called it our experimental trip because this camping expedition will find us staying in only 4 campgrounds and we will be in three of them over a week. We could find ourselves a bit stir crazy. Or…who knows? We may just love slowing down a bit and getting to really know an area!

You will notice our sweet Onyx will be missing from this camping trip. We lost her at Christmas time from a deadly stroke. She really was our daily spark of joy! Because this is our first camping trip ever where we haven’t had her smiling face, her “let’s go attitude” and her loyal companionship, we are dedicating this trip to her. From time to time, throughout this blog, if you don’t mind…we will share a blast from our past with Onyx.

Onyx…2010-2022 Picture Fall 2021
Driving in on a crazy 2 lane road that should have been
termed only a 1 1/2 lanes, we were excited to see this sign.
I know this site makes us look like we are the only ones here but…
There are probably 15 other campers on this loop.

When we left Tennessee, the rhododendron leaves were rolled up tighter than a newspaper and it was cold. Picture below. We are hiking among the rhododendron tomorrow so we will be able to compare. 20 degrees is the temperature forecast the weatherman has gifted us with for tonight. We have not connected into the water supply here for fear of it freezing and we have our H2O tank heaters working overtime to keep the water from freezing that we carry on-board. Our electric furnace called the Vornado is madly trying at to keep us warm within the camper. We will see how successful we are keeping passably warm tonight.

We have seen them curled up tighter. But Tennessee was cold when we left.

  1. So glad that it was only a minor issue. Never second guess your decision to be checked out. It is always better to be safe.
We will be praying for you both on this trip. Losing your precious Onyx will be hard on this trip, but you have such great memories of her and your time with her. She knew how much she was loved and she loved you both so very much. You guys were a perfect fit for each other. We always loved having her around. She was so smart and beautiful.
Enjoy your trip! We think slowing down and enjoying the area is a great idea, not that our opinion should matter. Lol😁
Do you like the campground that you are in? It does look deserted.
    Be safe,
    Our love and prayers

    1. Beautiful campground! Pictures of our morning hike to come! I imagine in this place is packed in the summer! Thank you for your kind words about Onyx! She loved both you and Dave, RuthAnn!

  2. We know Onyx will not be forgotten – and what a sweet way to remember her, by sharing how much she meant to you guys – especially on these camping journeys. It won’t be easy, seeing her picture made me tear up. And though this trip won’t be the same, may you find joy and fun in this adventure together. Love and hugs.
